The winners of the British Fantasy Awards 2026 were announced at Fantasycon. Find out all the details on our blog.

BFS Horizons, the twice-yearly fiction magazine from the British Fantasy Society, is increasing its contributor pay rate. All short stories, poetry and art submissions accepted and published will receive the new rates from issue #22, due out in 2027.
The new pay rates are flat rates, and as follows:

Currently Horizons pays £20 per piece. Editor Robin C.M. Duncan (pictured) anticipates this new rate will make the editors’ choices even more difficult in future.
“As editor, I’m delighted with our announcement of upcoming increases in contributor payments at BFS Horizons magazine,” says Duncan. “After the publication of Issue #20 just before Fantasycon in Glasgow with our first internal coloured art, and the editorial team hard at work drawing Issue #21 together, it’s inspiring and satisfying to be able in future to give more back to our excellent contributors and, by extension, to the BFS community.
“With these new rewards for fiction, poetry and art applicable for work accepted from 2027 (for Horizons #22 and onwards), I expect my fellow editors and I—Ian Hunter in poetry, and welcoming new art editor, Sophie Jonas-Hill—will have an even harder job choosing from the entertaining, thought-provoking and rewarding submissions we receive across the whole wide range of what is and can be described as Fantasy. I feel this a real step forward for BFS Horizons, and I am excited about the future.”
Says BFS Chair David Green: “I am delighted that the society is increasing its payments to creatives for their work in Horizons. Art is important, and it’s crucial that creatives are properly paid for the work we do. The BFS has lofty goals we’d love to achieve in this regard. Today’s announcement is only a first step on that path, but a vital one.”
BFS Horizons is currently open to submissions for fiction, poetry and art. Find all the details over here.
