Fantasycon 2024: Meet The Dealers!

We asked the dealers at this year’s Fantasycon to tell us who they are and what they’re selling. In no particular order, the answers are listed below. This is not exhaustive, so prepare for surprises!

Sure, Fantasycon is all about the community and the meeting up and the social aspects and all that… but really, it’s about going home with a suitcase laden with new toys. These are just some of the people willing to sell you those toys (and also books) in the Dealer’s Hall – which we’re calling the Goblin Market – in Chester this weekend.

Not got your Fantasycon ticket yet? Grab one over here: Day tickets start at £40, weekend tickets are £85, and members get discounts!

Otto Redman

Otto is an author of Horror and is bringing his novels to Fantasycon. His first book The Vampire of Portsmouth was released in 2022 and August saw the release of his second witchcraft-based epic Sarah’s Cats.

Otto’s fascination with horror started from a young age with television series such as the Addam’s Family, theMunsters and the Twilight Zone. He sought out horror and gothic literature from authors including Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker, H P Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe and developed a love for the classic Hammer Horror and B-movies of the 1960s and 1970s. Otto revelled in the worlds created by Wes Craven, Jess Franco and Jean Rollin and the charismatic acting of Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price.

During the COVID pandemic he made the decision to redirect his career into writing horror stories of his own centred around his hometown. His first novel The Vampire of Portsmouth was released in 2022 and having enjoyed the process, Otto decided that his next novel would be far longer and focus on witchcraft. Otto lives near Portsmouth in the South of England with his numerous cats. Sarah’s Cats is his second horror novel.

Liz Cain

Liz Cain is a Nuclear Medicine Physicist by day, and an urban fantasy author by night. She was born in East Yorkshire in the UK and grew up near the sea with her parents and two sisters. She moved to the midlands, which was much too far south for her, and spent 20 years trying to move back to her home town.

She has travelled at every opportunity from Thailand and Australia to touring national parks in North America. Liz has done lots of crazy things for charity, including skydiving, running, swimming, and even cutting off her hair. While out on adventures she finds herself weaving intricate tales in her head which one day she had to write down.

Liz has loved reading her whole life, growing up with Anne McCaffrey, Mary Stewart, and Terry Goodkind. Becoming an author happened by chance when she jumped at the opportunity to help a friend tell a story that deserved to be told. It inspired her to follow her lifelong dream and now she is self-publishing her own kickass, no-nonsense FMCs who you’ll love.

Cathaven Press

Jilly Paddock & I run Cathaven Press. It was originally started around a decade ago specifically to publish her science fiction novels on Kindle.

I (Dave Brzeski) got involved with Occult Detective Quarterly from issue #1, and when publisher, Sam Gafford, passed away unexpectedly from a massive heart attack, we decided to take it over. We’d learned by then that the original quarterly schedule was too difficult for the other original editor, John Linwood Grant, and I to maintain. This was prescient, as COVID hit soon after we took over, and both John, and I have suffered some serious health scares. By sheer luck, we discovered that Jilly was very good at book formatting, even with something as complicated as a book with lots of images. Our first issue was Occult Detective Magazine #6, and we’ll be selling all issues from that point, through #10 at the convention. We also have 2 mythos specials out, plus a number of single author books by Rosemary Pardoe, Bev Allen & Tina Rath. We will also have Jilly Paddock’s science fiction novels on sale, albeit they are currently published by Pro Se Press.

We’re a labour of love publisher, in that we’ve yet to sell well enough for John, Jilly, or I to pay ourselves a single penny, albeit we always pay our authors, and artists.

Occult Detective Magazine has been nominated for the best magazine category in the British Fantasy Awards this year, which is very exciting.
