The Importance of Diversity and Outreach + Plans for 2025 in the British Fantasy Society

To help us get the year started right, we’re highlighting some of the amazing work done by our BFS volunteers and the great opportunities our members can seize. Today, we meet our new Outreach & Inclusion Officer Marve Michael Anson and hear more about her plans for this year.

The fantasy genre is unique in its ability to stand as both a mirror to society and a playground for our imagination. More than ever before, inclusivity and representation are at the forefront of many discussions in the fantasy genre—and with every step toward progress, we see just how much farther we have to go.

The past few years, with a focus point from 2020, saw a rise in DEI initiatives that sought to create and support more inclusive and representative environments. The publishing industry was one of those at the forefront of promoting this change, and we have seen some improvement in the representation of the kinds of stories being published and made available to the market. In light of this success, more writers from these communities are being emboldened and empowered to add their voices to the literary collective and pursue dreams of publication.

The British Fantasy Society is dedicated to creating a community that supports writers at various levels of their journey. We recognise the need for this diversity of voices to be heard, as their unique perspectives are crucial in shaping a more inclusive literary landscape. We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion, and we are taking proactive steps towards supporting talented writers in our community. We will continue to empower voices that have been historically marginalised in the literary world.

These values not only enhance the richness of the stories told and shared with the world but also ensure that all individuals feel seen and valued. The different cultures, mythologies, and experiences also bring fresh ideas and perspectives into the genre, introducing new world-building techniques and narrative structures that shift the reader’s understanding of fantasy itself. Diversity in fantasy invites broader creativity, allowing writers and creators to break free from tired and worn tropes and create something innovative and thought-provoking.

“Diversity is being invited to the party.
Inclusion is being asked to dance”

The Role of Outreach

The BFS’s Outreach team is focused on actively engaging with communities that have historically been sidelined, offering them the opportunity to contribute to the cultural tapestry of fantasy. This means supporting marginalized authors from the global majority, encouraging diverse creators in the gaming industry, and amplifying voices in online spaces like fan communities and conventions.

The importance of diversity and outreach in the fantasy community cannot be overstated. As the genre continues to evolve, it is crucial that everyone—regardless of race, gender, background, or ability—feels included and represented. By focusing on outreach and inclusivity, we ensure we support writers whose stories are as rich, varied, and dynamic as our world.

Through initiatives like mentorship programs, sponsorships and industry collaborations we hope to encourage more writers from diverse backgrounds to join our community and find a safe space among our cohort. We are also committing to a more diverse guestlist for panels, workshops and other events.

We’d love to see more of the global majority in our community, and encourage all members to apply for our mentorship programme as well. Click here for more information.

To reflect our commitment to these values of inclusion, the BFS is offering a 50% annual digital membership discount to all writers from underrepresented communities. Head here to purchase yours.
