Shona Kinsella and international bestselling author Philip Reeve chat about writing, illustrating, and musical comedy.

Philip Reeve (he/him): Philip Reeve’s first novel was Mortal Engines (published in 2001). It won the Smarties Gold Award, the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award and the Blue Peter ‘Book I Couldn’t Put Down’ Award. Predator’s Gold, Infernal Devices and A Darkling Plain followed – the last of which won both the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. Philip’s novel set in Dark Age Britain called Here Lies Arthur won the Carnegie Medal 2008. Night Flights (July 2018) is a collection of short stories from the Mortal Engines series based on character, Anna Fang. His latest novel is titled Bridge of Storms (out February 2026) which follows the adventures of Tamzin Pook. It’s an epic companion to Reeve’s Mortal Engines prequel, Thunder City, which published in 2024. Born in Brighton in 1966, Philip now lives on Dartmoor with his wife and son. Her short fiction can be found in various magazines and anthologies. Shona was the editor of the British Fantasy Society’s fiction publication BFS Horizons for four years and is now the Chair of the Society. She has been shortlisted for four British Fantasy Awards.
