Worlds of Fantasy: Imagined worlds are often inspired by real-world locations, people and circumstances. Fantasy writers draw from experience to create new realities, populated by strange and familiar creatures and characters.
Join moderator Shona Kinsella and panellists Suniti Namjoshi, David Green, and Anna Smith Spark as they chat about their favourite fantasy worlds and how they approach creating them.

Suniti Namjoshi (she/her): Suniti Namjoshi is a fabulist, a poet, a satirist and a feminist. She was born in Mumbai, India and lives in the southwest of England. Her books include Feminist Fables, Building Babel, Saint Suniti and the Dragon, Goja, The Fabulous Feminist, Suki, Aesop the Fox, The Good-Hearted Gardeners and most recently Matriarchs, Cows and Epic Villains.

David Green (he/him): David Green is a neurodivergent writer of the epic and the urban, the fantastical, the cosy, and the mysterious. With his character-driven dark fantasy series Empire Of Ruin, or urban fantasy noir Hell In Haven, David takes readers on emotional, action-packed thrill rides. Hailing from the north-west of England, David now lives in County Galway on the west coast of Ireland with his wife and Godzilla-obsessed son. When not writing, David can be found wondering why he chooses to live in places where it constantly rains. ​David’s Path Of War was nominated for Best Novel at the 2023 BFS Awards, and he is repped by Laura Bennett of Liverpool Literacy Agency. Anna Smith Spark (she/her): Anna Smith Spark is the author of the Empires of Dust grimdark epic fantasy series The Court of Broken Knives, The Tower of Living and Dying and The House of Sacrifice; the standalone A Woman of the Sword; and A Sword of Bronze and Ashes, book one of her folk horror high fantasy series The Remaking of This World Ruined. Her work has been described as ‘a masterwork’ and ‘awe-inspiring’. She’s dyslexic, dyspraxic, ASD, PhD; previous jobs include English teacher, fetish model and petty bureaucrat. Shona Kinsella (she/her): Shona Kinsella is a multiple-award-nominated Scottish fantasy author. Her works include The Heart of Winter, The Vessel of KalaDene series, The Flame and the Flood, and non-fiction Outlander and the Real Jacobites: Scotland’s Fight for the Stuarts. She was the editor of the British Fantasy Society’s fiction publication BFS Horizons for four years and is now the Chair of the Society.
