Crafting a Cosy Fantasy with David Green

Event Date:

27 July, 2024

Event Time:

1:00 pm BST

Event Location:

From Legends and Lattes to The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, and from The House in the Cerulean Sea to Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands, cosy fantasy has sidled up to many a fantasy reader, covered them with a warm blanket and a lovely cup of tea, and has taken up a permanent place in the genre.

But isn’t fantasy all about epic battles, earth-shattering stakes, and larger-than-life heroes and villains (with a dash of moral ambiguity thrown in for good measure)? Not to mention the dazzling array of awe-inspiring creatures, compendiums of accompanying history to build out those wide worlds contained within the stacks of pages and plots filled with staggering adventure and mind-boggling acts of daring-do. Not always, and there’s nothing to say that many of those staples can’t exist in cosy fantasy. The genre comes in many delightful flavours and several wonderful shapes.

Join the 2023 Robert Holdstock-nominated author David Green as he guides you through crafting a cosy-fantasy story. This workshop will take you through the process of establishing stakes in a low-threat narrative and designing character-driven plot, to writing personal tales that promote found families and happy endings. All best read in the reader’s favourite, comfiest chair, under their warmest blanket and with a cup of tea in hand. And don’t forget the steady supply of biscuits.

This workshop will take place via zoom and will be recorded for catch up viewing later.
