Welcome to Spooktober 👻

‘Tis that time of year when even the most sunshiney of humans start to turn to the dark side… Yes, today is 1 October, and at the BFS we’re (unfortunately, sorry) dubbing it Spooktober—and we have big plans.

Throughout the month of October, we’re going to hand over the reins to our horror members. Yes, the British Fantasy Society covers all of speculative fiction, and in amongst the dragons and swords you’ll find some creatures of the night. This is their month, and we salute them.

During Spooktober (honestly, if you have a better name for it, please let us know!) we’re going to feature a stack of guest posts from members talking about their love of horror, and sharing some tips and thoughts from their experience in the genre. We’re also kicking off our weekly member profile series this month by spotlighting some of our BFS horror members; you’ll find them on the site every Friday, with the guest posts popping up on Wednesdays and over the weekend.

Don’t worry, fair fantasy and scifi members; we haven’t forgotten about you. While this month is a horror takeover, it’s not a smothering. We will still bring you updates and news from across the world of speculative fiction as it comes up.

This month-long campaign is a sign of things to come. Your new BFS committee is hard at work planning ways to bring you more regular blog content on this website, as well as across our social media channels. Details on who and where to follow us are at the bottom of this article. If you’ve got something coming up—a book launch, a Kickstarter, some good news—please let us know by emailing You can also use that email address to pitch us guest posts and ideas for articles.

Make sure you’re following us on social media to hear about new posts, and be sure to tag us in your own socials so we can share what you’re up to!
