Benefits of the British Fantasy Society

BFS members who connect with us get to know about the latest events, including our annual convention, Fantasycon.

Publications

Members will receive our publications, either the physical copy, or the digital, depending on your membership type. Our regular publications are:

We also produce occasional special publications and all members will receive a free digital copy of these.

Voting in the British Fantasy Awards

Members are able to vote for entries in the annual British Fantasy Awards. The British Fantasy Awards are the longest running fantasy awards in the UK. We started with just one award and now have 12 different categories across different mediums, and for a variety of creators in the genre.

Community Discord server

Members can discuss their books, the industry, and upcoming events. All in a respectful and safe members-only environment. Get to know people in the community prior to events, and even join in with informal, small group meet ups with other members.

Writing Sprints

Are you a writer? Join in with our members only sprinting sessions, usually held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. A small group gets together via zoom to write as much as possible in twenty-minute bursts.

The BFS Book Club

Join us in reading a different SFFH book each month, with discussion threads in the Discord, and members-only zoom Q&As with the authors.

Newsletter

The newsletter connects all the members of the BFS and keeps them in the know

All the latest news rounded up, the Newsletter is a valuable resource. It lets members know about our latest opportunities to get involved, what’s going on, and even opportunities to be published with us. And they can even use it for their own needs (see “Your Say” below).

Event discounts

Save money on the events you already love

BFS members can enjoy our online events for free or for a discounted price. They also get a discount on their Fantasycon memberships. These savings add up to be worth the annual membership several times over for the most active fans!

Have your say

As members, you can not only read what the BFS produces, but also contribute your own announcements and articles! Members can also attend our AGM, either in person or online, and vote to shape the Society’s future.

Member profiles and guest posts in our blog

The blog on this website is available for members to pitch a contribution (Contact here). We’d love to hear about…

Reviews

Ask for a review for your own book or contribute a review for someone else’s! All our reviewers strive to be honest and fair, no matter whose book is being discussed. However, as a member, you may get to be reviewed that little bit quicker…

Competitions

Get one free entry per member to both our Short Story Competition and Art Competition, run annually.

Writing Retreat

Members have the opportunity to take part in our annual Writing Retreat, which is always very popular.

Mentorship Programme

Members have the chance to take part in our Mentorship Programme, which is heavily subsidised for all participants.

Funding

Members have the opportunity to apply for fully funded places on the Mentorship Programme, the Retreat, Fantasycon, the online workshops and more.
